Renovation Update

and then I will tell you about our incredible trip to Disney World.

The night before we left for Tim’s Annual General Meeting (the reason we were able to piggyback a trip to The Happiest Place on Earth) we sold our stove and microwave to a man who answered our ad in Craigslist. Have I ever told you how much I love the internet? We put up an ad and the next day we sold our stove and microwave, they paid us cash and hauled them both away. If we wouldn’t have sold them they would have been hauled away and been destroyed. We made some cash for our trip and spared the landfills a couple of appliances that still had years of life left in them.

When we left on the 13th Tim and I were doing our best to be optimistic. We would be gone for 8 days and we were told the floors would be finished when we got home. We were told the cabinets would be installed. We were told the basement would be finished.

When we left the house the dust had just settled from the wall they knocked down between the kitchen and the dining room.

Six days from when we left (the 19th) and two days before we were scheduled to head home from Florida Tim talked to our contractor on the phone and was informed that electrical took up most of the week and that flooring wouldn’t be started until the next day.

I almost threw an over tired and over stimulated toddler style tantrum as if I had been told NO I couldn’t have a $55 3 foot tall Minnie Mouse. Disney is a great place but I think they may hold the world record for tantrums by both adults and kids per-capita.

Tim reassured me that as long as the basement was done, we could survive.

We got home on Friday the 21st and the basement wasn’t done

Tim threw a man-sized swearing tantrum, drank a beer and sulked. I joined him because sometimes throwing fits is good for the soul.

To all the families that I told to suck it up while they whined on HGTV about how renovations are hard, I am so so very sorry. You are right. Renovations suck. It is hard to keep your eye on the new cabinet and freshly lacquered floor prize when nail guns are firing, you have three hungry kids and no kitchen.

Tim and I worked our asses off Saturday and finished all the little things that the contractor was supposed to finish in the basement (except lights and vents) so we could start putting the basement back together. By 11pm on Saturday night we had desks and computers set up in the office. Nerd priorities people. Computers come before couches in this house.

Today, Sunday, the contractor and his assistant installed cabinets and I posted our fridge as a FREE CURB ALERT!!! on craigslist and it was picked up with in 2 hours (I love the internet!). We got the basement to a place that was organized enough to order a pizza and watch Frozen as a family.

Tomorrow we check into a hotel and spend the next 4 out of the 5 weeknight sleeping at a hotel just 10 minutes from our home. The only redeeming thing about our hotel stay is the free breakfast and the pool. We would all, including the kids, rather be at home but in order to avoid the fumes on the staining and sealing process of the floor we are packing up and moving out. Again.

This is where we are now. God willing we will have stained and sealed floors by the end of the week.

I am having uploading issues right now and we check into a hotel tonight so it will probably be a few days before I can get more photos up. For now, bask in the glory of those white shaker cabinets!
